What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

How The Lakes Approaches Intensive Outpatient Treatment

01

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps identify thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to substance use. Clients learn to replace self-defeating cycles with practical coping skills and positive actions.

02

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT):

DBT focuses on emotional regulation and mindfulness. It’s especially effective for people managing mood swings, trauma, or co-occurring disorders alongside addiction.

03

Group Therapy and Peer Support:

Group sessions offer connection, accountability, and shared understanding. Clients see they’re not alone and build a sense of community that reinforces recovery.

04

Family Therapy:

Addiction affects everyone involved. Family therapy helps loved ones communicate openly, rebuild trust, and create healthy boundaries at home.

05

Medication Management:

When appropriate, medical staff provide medication oversight for mental health conditions or withdrawal symptoms, ensuring safe, coordinated care.

06

Holistic and Experiential Therapies:

Yoga, art therapy, and guided meditation promote self-awareness, balance, and overall well-being. These practices help clients reconnect with themselves beyond addiction.

Who Is IOP For?

What is IOP treatment?

IOP, or Intensive Outpatient Program, is a structured level of care that provides several hours of therapy and clinical support each week while allowing clients to live at home. It’s designed for people who don’t need 24-hour supervision but still benefit from consistent therapeutic guidance.

How long does IOP last?

The average IOP schedule runs for about six to eight weeks, although the exact length depends on your personal goals, progress, and clinical recommendations. Some clients complete the program sooner, while others continue longer to strengthen coping skills and confidence before moving to standard outpatient care.

Can I work or go to school during IOP?

Yes. Flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of IOP. Clients can continue working, studying, or caring for family while attending therapy several times a week. Our program is designed to fit into real life, not pull you away from it. The Lakes team helps each client build a schedule that supports both treatment and daily responsibilities so recovery becomes something that grows with your life, not around it.

Is IOP effective for both substance use and mental health disorders?

Yes. The Lakes IOP treats both substance use disorders and mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, trauma, and other co-occurring challenges. This integrated approach, often called dual diagnosis treatment, helps clients address the full picture of their wellbeing, not just the symptoms of addiction.

Do you offer IOP near Tampa and Orlando?

Yes. The Lakes IOP program in Florida is located in Lakeland, conveniently positioned nearby Tampa and Orlando. This central location makes treatment accessible for clients across Central Florida, whether you’re coming from a nearby city or commuting from surrounding areas.

What happens after IOP?

When IOP ends, recovery continues. Many clients transition into our Outpatient Program to maintain structure and support while living more independently. Others join aftercare or community support groups to stay connected with peers and accountability partners. The Lakes team helps you create a personalized aftercare plan so you leave with a clear path forward.
