When someone is in a mental health crisis, the most important thing is safety and stability. At The Lakes, we help coordinate care with trusted inpatient psychiatric hospitals in Florida so individuals can receive the support they need right away. Our team guides clients and families through the process of getting help quickly, ensuring that every step feels informed, compassionate, and connected to long-term recovery.

Once stabilized, we help clients transition into one of our outpatient mental health programs to continue treatment in a calm, structured environment.

What Is Mental Health Crisis Management?

Who Needs Crisis Management?

01

Initial Call or Referral

When someone contacts The Lakes, whether it’s a client, family member, or healthcare provider, our admissions specialists listen carefully to understand the situation. If the person is unsafe or at immediate risk, we provide guidance on reaching emergency departments or a nearby behavioral health hospital for urgent care.

When short-term stabilization is needed, we connect clients to partner facilities that provide 24-hour inpatient treatment and medical supervision.[2] These hospitals often include access to behavioral health services such as crisis response, psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and supportive therapies for conditions like suicide prevention, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, or severe depression.

02

Coordination with a Partner Facility

Once a suitable facility is identified, The Lakes helps coordinate the admission process. Our team works directly with hospital clinicians and medical staff to ensure that all information, history, and needs are communicated clearly. We also support family members during this step, explaining what to expect and helping them feel confident that their loved one is in good hands.

We collaborate only with trusted behavioral health centers and hospitals that specialize in short-term stabilization, psychiatric evaluation, and evidence-based approaches such as medication therapy or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) when appropriate.

03

Ongoing Communication During Stabilization

While a client is receiving inpatient care, The Lakes stays connected with both the facility and the family whenever possible. We check in on progress, share updates, and begin discussing next steps for continued treatment. This coordination helps create a seamless handoff between hospital care and ongoing mental health services, so that no one feels lost in the process.

04

Step-Down Transition to The Lakes

Studies show that structured transitional care, including step-down programs like PHP or IOP, can significantly reduce rehospitalization and improve long-term outcomes.[3]

Once a client is stable and ready to move forward from crisis care, our admissions team helps plan a smooth transition into one of The Lakes’ outpatient treatment programs for ongoing treatment. This may include our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for structured daytime care or our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for more flexible scheduling.

Whatever program a client is transitioned to, their clinicians will develop a personalized treatment plan to help them continue building coping skills, emotional stability, and long-term wellness. By working closely with hospital providers and families, we make sure every step toward recovery feels supported, informed, and hopeful.

Other Mental Health Levels of Care at The Lakes

After stabilization in a hospital or crisis setting, many clients continue their recovery through one of The Lakes’ outpatient programs. Each level of care is designed to help you rebuild balance, develop healthy coping skills, and move forward with steady support.

The Lakes offers the following treatment programs for mental health:

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Once stabilized, clients often step down into The Lakes’ Partial Hospitalization Program, which offers full-day structure and support without overnight stays. This level of care includes therapy, medication management, and holistic activities designed to restore emotional balance and create healthy routines.

What is considered a mental health crisis?

A mental health crisis is any situation where a person’s thoughts, emotions, or behaviors create an immediate risk to themselves or others. This may include suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, psychosis, or severe emotional distress. During these moments, safety and stabilization are the top priorities.

Do you provide crisis stabilization at The Lakes?

The Lakes does not offer crisis stabilization directly, but we coordinate with licensed inpatient psychiatric hospitals in Florida to ensure clients receive proper care. Once a person is stable, our team helps them transition into the right outpatient program for continued recovery.

What should I do in a mental health crisis?

If someone is in danger, call 911 or reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988. In Florida, you can also contact the mental health hotline by dialing 211 for local assistance. Once immediate safety is ensured, contact The Lakes to discuss next steps for long-term treatment and support.

How long does crisis stabilization last?

The length of stay in a hospital or stabilization unit varies depending on the severity of symptoms. Most clients remain for several days to one week before transitioning into outpatient or partial hospitalization care. The Lakes team helps coordinate this step to make sure the transition feels smooth and supported.

What happens after stabilization?

After crisis stabilization, clients often continue care through The Lakes’ PHP or IOP programs. These levels of care provide structured therapy, medication management, and family involvement to help maintain progress and prevent relapse.

Do you offer support for families?

Yes. A mental health crisis affects everyone involved, and our team provides guidance and education for loved ones throughout the process. Once the client enters outpatient care, family therapy can help strengthen communication and rebuild trust.
