What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

The Lakes’ Approach to IOP Behavioral Health

01

Individual therapy

Private sessions with a licensed therapist provide space to talk openly, process emotions, and work through personal challenges at your own pace. These conversations often lead to insight and growth that continue long after treatment ends.

02

Group therapy

Small, guided sessions help clients connect with others who understand what they’re going through. In these groups, people share experiences, learn communication skills, and build a sense of belonging in a safe, supportive environment.

03

Family therapy

Recovery often extends beyond the individual. Family sessions help loved ones rebuild trust, improve communication, and understand how to support healing both for the client and for themselves.

04

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT focuses on recognizing and changing thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, depression, and mood instability. It’s one of the most effective, evidence-based approaches for long-term emotional health.

05

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT teaches mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation. These practical skills help clients stay grounded during stressful situations and handle emotions more calmly.

06

Medication management

Our psychiatrists and medical staff provide ongoing evaluations and medication support when needed. This helps clients maintain balance, track progress, and make informed choices about their care.

07

Life skills and wellness activities

Recovery isn’t just about therapy; it’s about creating a life that feels manageable and fulfilling. We include mindfulness, creative expression, and stress-management exercises that support calm, confidence, and emotional grounding.

Who Is IOP for?

Other Mental Health Levels of Care at The Lakes

Recovery isn’t a single step. It’s a process that continues as your needs change. The Lakes offers multiple levels of mental health care so clients can move forward with the right amount of structure and support at every stage.

In addition to Intensive Outpatient Treatment, we also offer the following programs:

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

For clients who need more focused, daytime structure, our PHP provides full-day treatment that includes group and individual therapy, clinical support, and medication management. It’s often the next step after crisis stabilization, giving clients the consistency and care needed to regain balance before transitioning to IOP.

Crisis Management Placement

When someone is in immediate emotional distress, our team helps coordinate care with trusted inpatient hospitals and behavioral health centers throughout Florida. We make sure clients receive 24-hour stabilization in a safe environment, then guide them back to outpatient care once they’re ready.

What’s the difference between IOP and PHP?

Both are structured treatment programs, but they differ in intensity and time commitment. The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides full-day care with multiple therapy sessions and clinical support throughout the day. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets several times per week for shorter sessions, allowing clients to maintain more independence. Many people step down from PHP into IOP once they’re ready for a bit more flexibility while still staying connected to their care team.

How long does the IOP last?

Most clients take part in IOP for about six to eight weeks, though the exact length varies from person to person. Your clinician and treatment team will work with you to adjust the timeline based on your goals, progress, and comfort level. Some clients continue longer for additional structure before moving into traditional outpatient therapy or aftercare.

Can I work or go to school during IOP?

Yes. The flexibility of IOP is one of its biggest benefits. Sessions are scheduled several days a week, so clients can continue working, attending classes, or taking care of family responsibilities while still receiving consistent therapeutic support.

Do you accept insurance or Medicare and Tricare?

Yes. The Lakes accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicaid, Medicare, and Tricare, along with private-pay options. Our admissions team will verify your benefits, review what’s covered, and answer any questions before treatment begins.

Do you treat co-occurring substance use or addiction issues?

Yes. Many clients experience both mental health and substance use challenges, known as co-occurring disorders. Our clinicians are trained to address both sides of recovery, helping you understand how substance use and emotional health connect while building coping strategies for each.

What happens after I finish IOP?

After completing IOP, clients usually transition into ongoing outpatient therapy or join community support groups for continued growth. Our team also helps you create a personalized aftercare plan that may include therapy check-ins, medication management, and relapse prevention tools.
